Legal Window Tint (NY Compliant)

New York checks window tint darkness at annual state inspection with a calibrated meter, and it has since January 2017. An illegal tint job, whether too dark, reflective, or the wrong color, is an automatic inspection fail, and it's a surprisingly common problem with cars that were tinted somewhere else or years ago under different rules. We install every job to New York's exact legal limits from the start, and we can also evaluate tint that was installed elsewhere and tell you honestly whether it will pass.

The rule differs by vehicle type: sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and convertibles need at least 70% VLT on every window, front, rear, and back. SUVs, vans, and pickup trucks only need 70% on the front side windows, since the rear side and back windows can legally go darker. Reflective or mirrored film is never legal anywhere on the vehicle, and red, yellow, and amber tints are prohibited statewide. We match the install to your exact vehicle type so there's no guesswork at inspection time.

New York treats sedans differently than trucks and SUVs, and this is where a lot of drivers get tripped up after buying a used vehicle or moving here from another state. If your vehicle is classified as a passenger car, the 70 percent VLT minimum applies to every piece of glass, including the rear window and rear side windows, there is no dark-rear-glass exception for sedans here the way there is in some other states. If your vehicle is classified as a multi-purpose vehicle (SUV, van, or pickup), the 70 percent rule only applies to the windshield and the front two side windows. The rear side windows and rear window can legally be as dark as you want, with one condition: you need functioning outside mirrors on both sides of the vehicle that give a full, clear view behind you. If a mirror is cracked, missing, or was never installed on the passenger side, that dark rear tint becomes an inspection failure even though the film itself is perfectly legal for that vehicle class.

Your windshield is not off limits either. New York law sets a fixed measurement here rather than using the AS-1 line some other states rely on: non-reflective tint is only allowed on the uppermost 6 inches of the windshield, measured from the top down. Anything below that 6 inch line has to meet the same 70 percent standard as your front side windows and cannot be reflective or mirrored. We install a proper strip when customers want the extra glare reduction, and we make sure it does not creep below that line where an inspector would flag it.

When we say every install is guaranteed to pass inspection, that includes planning for how film reads over time. Inspectors use a calibrated tint meter against the 70 percent VLT standard, and film can read slightly darker as it ages. We do not install right at that legal edge. We select film so your reading stays comfortably inside the legal range even after a year or two of aging, rather than starting right at the line where normal wear could cause a problem.

  • Every install follows New York's legal VLT limits for your exact vehicle type

  • Free evaluation of tint installed elsewhere if you're worried it won't pass

  • Never reflective, mirrored, or a restricted color anywhere on the vehicle

  • Medical exemption guidance available through DMV Form MV-80W if it applies to you

Know Before You Fail

Sedans need 70% VLT on every window. SUVs, vans, and trucks get more flexibility on the rear, provided both outside mirrors are in place. We tell you exactly what applies to your vehicle before any film goes on.

Since 2017, Checked At Every Inspection

New York has measured tint darkness with a calibrated meter at annual inspection since January 2017. We install to the limit that actually holds up, not just what looks good in the driveway.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my current tint will pass inspection?

Book a quick appointment and we'll check it the same way DMV inspectors do. If it's too dark or an illegal color, we'll tell you honestly and can remove and reinstall legal film.

What happens if my tint fails inspection?

You won't pass until it's corrected. Most shops, including ours, can remove illegal film and reinstall a compliant tint, often the same day.

Does the legal limit differ for SUVs versus sedans?

Yes. Sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and convertibles need 70% VLT on every window. SUVs, vans, and pickup trucks only need that on the front side windows, the rear can go darker.

Can I get a medical exemption for darker tint?

Yes, for qualifying conditions like photophobia or lupus, through DMV Form MV-80W with a physician's statement. We're happy to walk you through that process.

I have a truck or SUV with dark tint on the back windows already, does it need mirrors to pass inspection?

Yes. New York only allows the rear window and rear side windows on SUVs, vans, and pickups to go darker than 70% if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides giving a full, clear rearview. If either mirror is missing, cracked, or was removed, that tint fails inspection even though it would otherwise be legal for your vehicle class.

Can I put a tint strip on my windshield in New York?

Yes. New York permits non-reflective tint on the uppermost 6 inches of the windshield, measured from the top down, that is a fixed measurement, not the AS-1 line some other states use. It cannot extend below that 6 inch line or be reflective or mirrored. We can install a top strip on its own or as part of a full package.
