Among the Long Island detailers who publish their prices, a full interior and exterior detail on a sedan runs $216 to $350, an SUV adds $25 to $50, and a professional ceramic coating is quoted anywhere from $800 to $1,500. Our Signature Detail is $325 for a sedan and $375 for an SUV, which puts it in the middle of that range, not at the bottom. This post lays out what each tier costs here, why Long Island runs above the national averages, what makes a quote climb on arrival, and the two line items almost nobody mentions: sales tax and the tip.

The Long Island Price Range, Side by Side

We read the published price pages of eight Suffolk and Nassau detailers on October 11, 2026, mobile and shop, and pulled the sedan prices. Several of the biggest names on the Island publish no prices at all, which tells you something on its own. The table shows the lowest and highest published figure for each kind of service and where ours lands.

ServiceLowest publishedHighest publishedGuinea Pig
Entry wash or express detail$80 to $134$199$199 Essential Detail
Interior only$150 to $160$250 to $325$259 Interior Refresh
Exterior only$70 to $120$150 to $250$239 Exterior Shine
Full interior and exterior detail$216 to $250$299 to $350$325 Signature Detail
Full detail with machine polish$400$499 to $550$525 Elite Detail
Standalone paint correction$300$499 to $799from $799 Paint Correction & Wax
SUV surcharge on a full detail$0$25 to $50$50 (Signature)
Pet hair add on$25$75$49

Two honest notes on that table. First, the $80 and $134 entries at the low end are real and they are cheaper than our Essential Detail, because they are a different product: a one hour hand wash with a quick vacuum, not a two hour detail. If that is what the car needs, those are fair prices. Second, almost every competitor number above carries a plus sign or the words “starting at” on the original page. Ours do not, and the next sections explain why that matters more than the sticker.

Our Prices by Package and Vehicle Size

Every price below is the exact figure in our booking system, and it is the same whether we come to your driveway or you drop the car at the shop in Islip Terrace. There is no travel fee anywhere in Suffolk County and nothing is charged until the work is done. SUVs and trucks are a flat, published add on rather than a judgment call at the curb. The difference between the Essential and Signature tiers, what each step includes, is covered in our post on what a wash and a detail actually include.

Add ons are priced the same way, flat and in advance: Headlight Restoration $89, Decon & Seal $79 on an Essential, Graphene Seal $59 on a Signature or Elite, Excessive Pet Hair $49 and Excessive Staining $59, with $20 to $30 more on larger vehicles. Those last two are the only condition based charges we have, and you choose them yourself when you book.

Why Long Island Costs More Than the National Average

An analysis of 89 mobile detailing operators in New York, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles, cited by Housecall Pro in August 2026, put the average basic package at $158, the standard package at $278 and the premium at $443. Long Island sits above those averages, and the reasons are checkable rather than mysterious.

Prices here are simply higher. The Bureau of Economic Analysis regional price parity for the New York metro area was 112.6 in 2024 against a national index of 100, per the Federal Reserve’s FRED database, so a service priced at the national average is effectively discounted 12 to 13 percent here. Labor is the biggest input, and the MIT Living Wage Calculator puts a living wage for one adult in Suffolk County at $31.69 an hour in 2026. A 2.5 hour Signature Detail that pays a detailer a living wage, plus the drive between towns, the generator fuel, the water carried on the van, and the product, has a cost floor that a $158 package cannot cover. Add insurance: Insureon’s 2025 figures for a detailing business run about $646 a year for general liability, $1,073 for a business owner’s policy and $1,567 for workers’ compensation, costs that scale with local wages too.

None of that is unique to us. It is why the published Long Island full detail range starts above $200 and why the operators at the very bottom of the market are either doing less or cutting a corner you will not see until the second wash.

Why a Quote Goes Up When the Detailer Sees the Car

The most common pricing complaint in this business is not the price. It is the price that changed. Three of the eight Long Island price pages we read say some version of “starting at,” “subject to change due to size and condition” or “at the technician’s discretion.” That is not dishonest; it is how detailers protect themselves from the car that arrives with a dog’s worth of hair in the carpet. Detailers on the Autogeek forum describe the same thing from their side: one prices pet hair on four levels from $15 to $60 and says the key is to “just tell them beforehand so it’s not a surprise,” another notes that a badly matted interior “can literally take 6 to 8 hours for the interior alone.”

We handle this differently. Vehicle size is a flat add on you see before you book. Heavy pet hair and set in stains are two named add ons, $49 and $59, that you pick yourself in the booking form. If we open a door and find something we cannot fully lift, we tell you at the appointment instead of inventing a charge afterward. The point is not that condition never matters; it is that you should know the rule before the van arrives.

Sales Tax: Detailing Is Taxable in New York

This is the line item no Long Island detailer explains. New York State’s Tax Bulletin TB-ST-105 says car wash and detailing services are taxable when staff wash, wax or vacuum the car. A standalone carpet or upholstery shampoo sold on its own can be exempt, but the bulletin is explicit that the moment it is bundled into a wash or a detail, the whole service is taxable. The combined rate in Suffolk County is 8.75 percent.

So on a Signature Detail for an SUV, $375, tax comes to $32.81 and the total is $407.81 before any tip. When you compare two quotes, ask whether each one is quoted before or after tax; a $340 quote that includes tax and a $325 quote that does not are nearly the same price.

Tipping a Mobile Detailer

There is no settled rule, and the forums split the way you would expect. One commenter on a $150 detail argued that “the tip is built into the price,” and a former detailer admitted “I never got tipped for detailing. I didn’t even think people did.” Industry guides suggest 10 to 20 percent for work you are happy with. Our own reviews show that some customers do tip and that they judge the job against the whole outlay: one four star review from a mold removal job noted that “for the cost and 30$ tip given I would’ve appreciated a tad bit more attention to detail,” while also saying the odor and mold were in fact removed. A tip is never required and never built into our prices. If the work was excellent and you want to, it goes straight to the person who did it.

Ceramic Coating and Window Tint Pricing

Ceramic coating is where Long Island quotes spread the widest, because the number depends on the paint correction underneath it and on the product. Owners in Long Island and New York forums report quotes of $800 to $1,200 for a three year coating and $1,499 for coated paint alone. Our ceramic coating tiers, all applied in the shop, are $699 for the 3 Year Ceramic (Artdeshine Graphene Hybrid+), $899 for the 5 Year Ceramic (Artdeshine Ayicon Pro+, rated 5 years or 40,000 miles) and $1,399 for the 7 Year Ceramic, with SUV and truck add ons of $200 to $600 depending on the tier. Correction comes first on every one, which is most of the labor and the reason a coating cannot be done in a driveway in a December afternoon. The honest comparison of coating against wax and sealant is in our ceramic coating vs wax post.

Window tinting is also shop only: Classic dyed film $199 and Ceramic IR $499 for a full vehicle on a sedan, with SUV and truck add ons of $50 to $200, or the front two windows only from $119. New York’s 70 percent light transmission rule applies to the front and rear door windows and is checked at inspection, which is why the legal film choice matters more than the price.

Deposits, Payment, and What a $700 Ticket Buys

Deposits are normal in this business. One Long Island mobile detailer takes 25 percent at booking and refunds it only with 48 hours’ notice, and industry guides describe 25 to 30 percent deposits with 48 hour windows as typical. We do not take a deposit, you pay after the work is done, and the same prices apply whether we come to you or you come to Islip Terrace.

What does the top of the range look like? Mayeli, who reviewed us in April 2026, wrote: “I paid $700 for a full detailing service, and it was absolutely worth it. He really takes his time with his work.” A $700 ticket is an Elite Detail on a truck with add ons, or a paint correction, and it buys six to eight hours of machine work, not a longer wash. Jay, in June 2026, put the other end of the scale in four words: “doesn’t overcharge. No bs.” Thirteen of our hundred most recent Google reviews mention price without being asked, and twelve of them call it reasonable or worth it.

How to Compare Two Quotes

Two quotes for “a full detail” can describe completely different afternoons. Before you pick the cheaper one, line them up on these points:

  1. Hours. A full detail that takes 90 minutes is a wash with a vacuum. Ours run about 2.5 hours for Signature and about 6 for Elite.
  2. Decontamination. Clay or chemical iron removal, or neither. Without it, wax goes on over bonded grit.
  3. Polish. Hand wax, single stage machine polish, or two stage correction are three different prices for three different results.
  4. Protection. Is a sealant or wax included, and rated for how long?
  5. Vehicle size. Published flat add on, or “call for pricing”? One Long Island shop refuses third row SUVs on its full packages entirely.
  6. Condition charges. Named add ons you choose, or a surcharge decided at the curb?
  7. Deposit and cancellation terms, and whether the quote is before or after the 8.75 percent sales tax.
  8. Water and power. Whether the mobile detailer brings them is covered in our guide to what you need to provide for a mobile detail.

We do not currently sell a membership. Customers who want a standing schedule use our maintenance plan, which is a recurring booking every four to eight weeks with priority scheduling and no automatic charge, and gift cards from $50 to $700 never expire, so a winter gift can be redeemed in spring.

How we know this: the Guinea Pig prices are the live booking catalog as of October 2026, the competitor figures were read from eight published Long Island price pages on October 11, 2026, and the tax, wage, price parity and insurance figures are linked to their primary sources above.

How much does a full mobile detail cost on Long Island?

Among detailers that publish prices, a full interior and exterior detail on a sedan runs $216 to $350, with $25 to $50 added for an SUV. Our Signature Detail is $325 for a sedan, $375 for an SUV and $425 for a truck, mobile or in shop, with no travel fee.

Is mobile detailing more expensive than going to a shop?

Not with us: every package is the same price in your driveway or at our Islip Terrace shop, and there is no travel fee in Suffolk County. Elsewhere, industry guides put typical mobile travel fees at $15 to $50 depending on distance, so ask before you book.

Is car detailing taxable in New York?

Yes. New York’s Tax Bulletin TB-ST-105 treats washing, waxing, vacuuming and detailing as taxable services, and a carpet shampoo becomes taxable too once it is part of a detail. In Suffolk County the combined rate is 8.75 percent, so a $375 service carries $32.81 in tax.

Why does the price say “starting at” and what makes it go up?

On most Long Island price lists, “starting at” means the detailer will adjust for vehicle size and condition when they see the car, usually for heavy pet hair, set in stains or an oversized vehicle. Our size add ons are flat and published, and the only condition charges are the Excessive Pet Hair ($49) and Excessive Staining ($59) add ons you select yourself.

Do I need to pay a deposit, and what happens if I cancel?

We do not take a deposit; you pay after the work is done. Some Long Island detailers require 25 percent at booking with a 48 hour refund window, so check the terms on any quote you compare against ours.

Should I tip a mobile detailer?

It is entirely optional. Industry guides suggest 10 to 20 percent for work you are happy with, and plenty of customers do not tip at all. A tip is never built into our prices and never expected; if you choose to leave one, it goes to the detailer who did the job.

If you would like a price for your specific vehicle, the detailing packages page shows every tier with the exact SUV and truck add ons, and you can book an appointment online in a few minutes, mobile anywhere in Suffolk County or at the shop. If you are not sure which tier fits, our guide to what happens at a mobile detailing appointment walks through the day from booking to the final walk around, and we are always glad to look at the car and tell you honestly which package it actually needs.
